Sun
The Sun is a common middle-sized yellow star which has been named Sol, after ancient Roman name. There are trillions of other stars in the universe just like the sun. Many of these stars have their own systems of planets, moons, asteroids, and comets.
The sun was born around 5 billion years ago in a cloud of gas and dust. Over many millions of years, that cloud began to into a common centre under the force of its own gravity.
As the cloud fell inward, it generated a tremendous amount of heat and pressure. As it grew the sun became hotter and hotter till finally it reached a temperature of around 1 million degrees. The suns core ignited, causing it to begin nuclear fusion.
Thermonuclear fusion is the process in which stars produce its light, heat, and energy. This happens at the core of the star. The core is superheated to millions of degrees. This heat travels towards the surface and radiates out into the universe.
Sun spots are cooler areas on the suns surfaces. The sun is far too hot for and astronaut to ever visit. But some areas of the sun are slightly cooler than others. These areas are known has sun spots.
When there is high solar activity, the sun releases a massive amount of gas and plasma into the atmosphere. These are known has solar flares.
